One square is 1% of Steam players, by the language they use (Steam Hardware & Software Survey, September 2026). Yet 66% of the 154,512 store pages we checked have no Simplified Chinese.

What the numbers say

No one has tested a single GIF or banner on its own. These are the clearest figures we found, and the ones we measured.

  1. The 200 best-selling indie games on Steam: 75% show GIFs or video in their About section. Of new store pages, 40% do.

    Wishlift, measured on Steam's top sellers (Indie tag), October 2026, and on our crawl of new pages.

  2. The same top sellers: 82% offer Simplified Chinese, in 12 languages on average. Of new store pages, 34% offer Chinese.

  3. Sold in English only, Nebulous: Fleet Command made 2% of its sales in China. Against the Storm, in 17 languages, makes 32% or more in China, Japan, Korea and Taiwan.

  4. Asked if they would still play an English-only Slay the Princess, 32% of players in China said yes. In Japan, 23%; in Korea, 22%.
